FOX Bias

When it comes to Fox News Channel, conservatives don't feel the need to "work the ref." The ref is already on their side. Since its 1996 launch, Fox has become a central hub of the conservative movement's well-oiled media machine. Together with the GOP, it's satellite think tanks and advocacy groups, this network of fiercely partisan outlets, such as the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal editorial page and conservative talk-radio shows like Rush Limbaugh, form a highly effective right-wing echo chamber where GOP-friendly news stories can be promoted, repeated and amplified.

One of the best examples of FOX bias is a movie called outfoxed, (www.outfoxed.org) if you have not seen it, do it. Another great example of their right-wing bias are the anchors at FOX. Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Brit Hume, Tony Snow, John Gibson, Neil Cavuto, Cal thomas, Eric Burns, and on and on. It's all right-wing propaganda all the time, yet they claim to be fair and balanced, yeah and I'm Elvis.

8-19-05 - And of course FOX is putting people on the air (Especially Bill O'Reilly) who are lying about Bill Clinton, Jamie Gorelick, Able Danger, and the 1995 wall guidelines. Whe you see these people you need to know they are lying, and you should contact CNN and complain. They do not correct them either, they just let them lie their ass off with no corrections.

Here is the truth - In the past week, conservative media -- including two New York Post columnists and two Post editorials -- have falsely suggested that information obtained by military intelligence purportedly identifying lead 9-11 hijacker Mohammed Atta may have been withheld from law enforcement officials because of a 1995 memo written by then-Clinton deputy attorney general Jamie Gorelick.

But the Gorelick memo and ensuing guidelines, which conservatives claim created a "wall" between intelligence agencies and law enforcement officials, had nothing to do with military intelligence -- those documents addressed communications only among divisions within the Department of Justice. Moreover, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, the "wall" that conservatives accuse Gorelick of enacting had been operative well before Gorelick -- or Clinton -- took office.

But if Able Danger did in fact identify Atta, the Gorelick memo and the subsequent 1995 Clinton administration guidelines based on it did not prevent the group from sharing that information with intelligence agencies or law enforcement officials. As former Attorney General John Ashcroft noted in his testimony before the 9-11 Commission, the Gorelick memo provided the "basic architecture" for the 1995 guidelines established by then-Attorney General Janet Reno that formalized rules for intelligence sharing that were already in place.

But, as the 1995 guidelines clearly state, the Gorelick memo and the guidelines applied only to intelligence sharing "between the FBI and the Criminal Division" within the Justice Department, not a military unit established by the Defense Department.

9-11 Commission executive director Philip Zelikow also clearly noted during the commission's hearings that the "wall" applied only to the Justice Department: "Over time, the wall requirement came to be interpreted by the Justice Department, and particularly the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, as imposing an increasingly stringent barrier to communications between FBI intelligence agents and criminal prosecutors."

FOX Lying About The Wall And Able Danger

8-10-05 -- One of the big stories on the internet and in the media is Cindy Sheehan.

Cindy Sheehan since has become a focal point in the partisan battle over the Iraq war, drawing the praise of many anti-war Democrats and the ire of Republicans who back Bush's decision.

Her role in that battle exploded Monday morning, when Matt Drudge - the infamous commentator behind the popular Drudge Report, a right-leaning online news site - accused Sheehan of changing her tune to serve political purposes.

Drudge's story, headlined "Protesting Soldier Mom Changed Story on Bush," was posted in the highest slot on the Web site that receives more than 5 million visits per day. It drew quotes from a Sheehan interview published June 24, 2004, in The Reporter, suddenly dragging the newspaper into the fray.

That story, by staff writer David Henson, was an account of Sheehan's visit with the president in Seattle.

In Henson's story, Sheehan admitted she and her husband, Patrick, debated before the meeting whether to ask pointed questions about the war and whether to vent their frustration over their son's sacrifice. Ultimately, the couple chose not to publicly criticize Bush in the meeting or shortly after.

In Henson's story, Cindy Sheehan explained carefully, "I now know he's sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis ... I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith."

Sheehan also said the trip to Seattle helped connect her family to others that had lost a son or daughter in Iraq. Sheehan said sharing their story with those families was rewarding, as was the time she got to spend with her own family.

"That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together," she said in the story.

Drudge included that quote in his Monday morning report, but didn't explain that it referred to sharing time with her family, not the president.

Yet there is a blackout on her story on the FOX news network, they do not report on her at all. In fact, the O'Reilly factor was supposed to have her on last night, but that never happened and no reason was given. CNN and MSNBC have covered her story quite a bit, yet FOX has almost totally ignored it. They have nothing about her on their website and they do not report her story on the TV news network at all. Bill O'Reilly smeared her with a talking points and with the far right Michelle Malkin, he basically called her a traitor.

O'REILLY: So I mean, I think Mrs. Sheehan bears some responsibility for this, and also for the responsibility of other American families who have lost sons and daughters in Iraq, who feel that this kind of behavior borders on treasonous.

Update: The left is on the verge of collapse

8-8-05 -- Anyone want to bet you dont hear a word about this on the O'Reilly factor tonight, or ever. At least 80 wealthy liberals have pledged to contribute $1 million or more apiece to fund a network of think tanks and advocacy groups to compete with the potent conservative infrastructure built up over the past three decades.

The money will be channeled through a new partnership called the Democracy Alliance, which was founded last spring -- the latest in a series of liberal initiatives as the Democratic Party and its allies continue to struggle with the loss of the House and the Senate in 1994 and the presidency in 2000. Many influential Democratic contributors were left angry and despairing over the party's poor showing in last year's elections, and are looking for what they hope will be more effective ways to invest their support.

The group has a goal of raising $200 million -- a sum that would inevitably come in part at the expense of more traditional Democratic groups, although alliance officials say donors have committed to maintaining past contribution levels

The Right spends between $400-500 million every year in just the think thank, training, and legal advocacy groups in its machine. That number doesn't even include their network of media outlets. Notice that O'Reilly never mentions how much the right spends on think tanks etc. every year.

The Story O'Reilly Will Never Report

O'Reilly claims there is no question the far left in America is on the verge of collapse

Now this is funny, O'Reilly is saying the far left is on the verge of collapse. How did he come to this conclusion, because one left-wing organization called America Coming Together is closing their doors.

What he dont tell you is that America Coming Together was formed to get John Kerry elected in 2004 and to defeat Bush. Now that the election is over and Bush won they are moving on to other things. Those people will get new jobs doing the same things for different groups etc. And Soros will spend his money with some other groups to win the 2008 election. O'Reilly acts like the group folded because the left do not want them anymore, nothing could be further from the truth.

O'Reilly also claims Air America is failing, wow is that getting old. How are they failing when their ratings are up 140% in LA and other cities. They are adding new stations all the time, and they are up to 67 stations now. O'Reilly has been saying they are failing for at least a year, all the time their ratings are going up and they are adding stations. They went from 4 stations to 67 stations in about 14 months. The experts say it takes at least 18 months to get established in any market, and it took the factor almost 3 years to get a million viewers. Yet after 14 months O'Reilly claims they are failing. He also said Donahue was a failure, yet he was pulled off the air at the time he was the #1 show on MSNBC. So as you can see the truth is not one of O'Reilly's strong suits.

O'Reilly claims there is no question the far left in America is on the verge of collapse. If that is true how does he explain the left-wing blog explosion, Bush job approval at 43%, congress approval at 37%, Kerry getting 59 million votes, Hackett getting 48% of the vote in a Republican district in Ohio where no Democrat had got more than 30% since 1990, etc. etc. Yet on O'Reilly's world the left in on the verge of collapse. Hell just a couple weeks ago he said the left was winning the PR battle against Bush, now he says the left is dead, which is it Bill ?

And of course he is thrilled that America Coming Together is folding, what a shocker, not !

Fox News (Comprehensive Guide to FOX News)

The Fox News Channel is a U.S. cable and satellite news channel. It is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. As of January 2005, it is available to 85 million subscribers in the U.S. and to further viewers internationally, broadcasting primarily out of its New York City studios.

Launched on October 7, 1996 to 17 million cable subscribers, the nascent network quickly rose to prominence in the late 1990s as it started taking market share away from CNN; Fox claims the channel is now the "most watched cable news channel" in the United States according to Nielsen Ratings. By the "share" measure Fox is the most watched, though CNN still tops Fox News in unique viewers.

Internal FOX editorial memos reveal FOX News Channel's inner workings

Documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald's new film Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism, which interviews former FOX employees to provide "an in-depth look at Fox News [Channel] and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know," premiered at the New School University in New York on July 13. The FOX News Channel markets itself as "fair and balanced," promising that "We report. You decide."

As The Washington Post reported on July 11, Greenwald's film features "a handful of memos from a top FOX executive that appear to suggest tilting the news." Media Matters for America has analyzed 33 such internal FOX memos, issued by FOX News Senior Vice President, News Editorial John Moody and Los Angeles Bureau Chief Ken LaCoste between May 9 and June 3, 2003 and March 12 and May 5, 2004.

FOX Spins John Bolton, Forgets About Karl Rove

You could almost see the FOX News producers sweating as they tried to figure out how to report the breaking news during Hannity & Colmes about John Bolton's involvement in the phony uranium memo without tying him to the Karl Rove Traitorgate scandal. You have to give them an A+ for not only concealing the Rove connection but for distorting the forged memo issue, too.

Token FNC brunette Uma Pemmaraju and platinum blonde Molly Henneberg reported the breaking news that, despite his claims to the contrary during his confirmation process, UN Ambassador nominee John Bolton testified during a senate inquiry into the flawed intelligence that Iraq was trying to buy materials in Africa to produce nuclear weapons. It was that intelligence that Ambassador Joseph Wilson debunked in a New York Times Op-Ed piece shortly before his wife was outed as a CIA agent in a piece by Robert Novak. We now know that Karl Rove was one of the sources of the same leak to another reporter for Time.

Henneberg completely ignored the Karl Rove/Traitorgate connection and downplayed Bolton's oversight as one wrong answer.
